Carré (Ferdinand) ["carré" is French for square]: French engineer (1824-1900) who made the first vapour-compression refrigerator (1857) and the first continuously running vapour-absorption refrigerator (1860). He was the first man to produce ice using refrigeration devices (1862) and the first to use ammonia as a refrigerant (1863). He was also responsible for the first shipment of frozen meat between America and France (1875).
